Yashwant first to speak: Name Modi for PM, party will gain
A DAY after Narendra Modi met BJP president Rajnath Singh to discuss the 2014 elections and how he could “serve the country”, senior party leader Yashwant Sinha Monday said the Gujarat Chief Minister should be declared the party’s prime ministerial candidate.
Broaching a topic that the BJP’s top leadership carefully avoids, Sinha said naming Modi PM candidate will benefit the party hugely.
While BJP leaders refused to be drawn into the debate, ally JD(U) said it did not consider Sinha’s statement as the BJP’s official view. While praising Modi, Rajnath Singh evaded a direct reply, saying decisions on such issues are taken by the party’s parliamentary board.
Sinha, who incidentally was outspoken in demanding Nitin Gadkari’s resignation as BJP chief over corruption allegations, told reporters on Monday: “A debate has been taking place for many days now. When I travel, there is a strong demand from common people and workers that Narendra Modi should be declared the PM candidate as this will benefit the party... After careful thought, I have concluded that if the BJP declares Modi as its PM candidate, then the BJP will benefit hugely in the elections. It will have a big impact on voters. I have no doubt about this.”
Sinha added that while a decision in this regard has to be taken by the party, anointing Modi was the sentiment of workers and the public.
