A 30-year-old woman was arrested as she was allegedly trying to kidnap a two-year-old child in Bhalswa Dairy, Northwest Delhi, on Saturday night. Local residents alleged that the woman, Sheila, had sacrificed six children in the area and intended to kill the child she was trying to kidnap, police said.
According to police, the residents caught the woman when she was escaping with the child. “We could not verify the allegations. Till now we have not found any evidence that she was linked to the killing of six children. We recovered a lot of religious literature and other items from her possession,” said Meenu Choudhury, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest).
Police said they arrested her on charges of attempt to kidnap and would produce her before a city court on Monday. “We have recovered religious material from his house but that doesn’t suggest she is involved in kidnapping and killing of minors. We are checking our record if any minor has gone missing from the area,” a senior police officer said.
Sheila is married and has two children.
“We saw a woman running with a child. When we chased her, she threw the child in a ditch and tried to flee. We caught her and handed her over to the police. We suspect she kidnaps children and kills them for religious purposes,” said Shankar a resident of Bhalswa Dairy. Further investigations are on.
