Clear instructions from Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal that government school premises will not be used for private or public functions seems to have fallen on deaf ears — at least in Abadpura Government Primary School located in Jalandhar city.

On Thursday, it hosted a wedding during the school hours allegedly without the knowledge of the school management. When students and teachers entered the school in the morning, they saw tents have been put up and a paath was in progress.

Principal Dalbir Kaur claimed she had never given permission to anyone to hold a function in the school. “I was surprised when I saw tents inside the school today morning. I asked those present at the function to stop th function, but they didn’t listen to me. Then I informed the district education officer,” Kaur said, adding that earlier, some locals had approached her for organising a function at the school premises, but she had refused them permission.

As the ceremony went on till the afternoon, the classes were held during the function. The school, which runs from 9 am to 3 pm, has around 100 students and four teachers. “I do not know the family which had organised the function,” said Kaur.

Deepak Telu, BJP SC Morcha and district grievances committee member also went to stop the function, but to no avail. “They showed me a permission letter issued to them by a former Congress councillor, who is still using his stamp as a councillor. They asked me to not to spoil their function and threatened me,” said Deepak, adding that he had made several attempts to contact Deputy Commissioner Shruti Singh but received no response.

When contacted, Director General (School Education) K S Pannu said: “It is unfortunate and I will get the matter inquired into. How can one organise a function in school premises and that too during school hours? The district administration must intervene to stop such nuisance.” DEO Primary Kuldip Sharma could not be reached despite several attempts.
