The government library will shift its base from Vishrambaug Wada to another place offered by Pune Municipal Corporation in the heart of the city. This was decided during fresh talks between library officials and the civic body recently.

With this, one of the two major hurdles in the attempts to restore grade I heritage structure under phase three is all set to clear. A large unit of Railway Mail Service (RMS) has been still operating from a portion of Vishrambaug Wada. State director of libraries, Bapurao Sananse, recently held a meeting with PMC authorities to discuss the issue of desired space following Newsline report dated August 2.

“We are ready to relocate to an unused civic school offered by PMC. We have demanded some more nearby space and will get it hopefully. The school needs some repair and renovation. The library will be moved in phases,” Sananse told Newsline on Monday.

PMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Jagtap said some area of the school was used for activities carried out under Urban Community Development Department. “We will ensure government library gets desired additional space,” he said.

Jagtap said the very presence of RMS at Vishrambaug Wada is a major hurdle in starting of restoration work. “We feel that RMS authorities could take considerable time in taking a call on shifting their establishment as decision has to be taken at a higher level. We had been communicating with local authorities so far, which has yielded little results,” he said.

RMS superintendent S S Pathak refused to speak on the issue. Chief Postmaster General of Maharashtra and Goa Circle, Col Mishra and Postmaster General, Pune region, were not available for comments.
