Dr Verghese Kurien, the father of the “White Revolution”, died today after a brief illness. Kurien, 90, is survived by his wife and daughter. He was cremated here in accordance with his last wishes.
Kurien, founder chairman of the National Dairy Development Board, is known as the architect of “Operation Flood” which heralded a new era for milk cooperatives in the country.
Terming him as an icon of the co-operative movement and dairy industry, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said: “His greatest contribution was to give a position of pre-eminence to farmers and their interest rather than those of middlemen.”
