Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday reserved the verdict on the petition for suo motu contempt proceeding against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her alleged remark against the judiciary. Hearing the arguments, the division bench of Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalya Bagchi questioned the counsel of the petitioner why the comment passed by Mamata should be treated as contempt of court. The CM had remarked on the corruption in the judiciary on August 14 during a seminar at Assembly. Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee, one of the counsels, argued that she intentionally attacked the judiciary to malign it and general people would lose confidence in the judiciary due to such a remark. But the bench pointed out that she had remarked on corruption in the judiciary and society in general. She did not refer to any court like the High Court or Supreme Court or any order passed by the court, said the division bench. Anybody could express their view in a seminar, the bench said.
