V-C to write to Punjab, UT Admns to attend Senate meetings

After issues of staff shortage, meagre salaries being paid to teachers and noncompliance of UGC/ Panjab University (PU) regulations, by B Ed and degree colleges affiliated with Panjab University witnessed heated discussion in the Senate meeting held on Sunday, the Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover has decided to write to Director, Public Instructions (Colleges) Punjab and the UT Administration to attend the Senate meetings henceforth.

Prof Grover said that being ex-officio members, they should attend the meetings so that they can come to know about the problems and issues related to affiliated colleges. The V-C further added that if need arises, he can write to the Punjab Chief Minister and Chief Secretary about it.

The V-C also assured Senators, representing colleges, to have a separate meeting in the coming days to discuss all the issues related to colleges.

The House saw debate over issues related to affiliated colleges when a matter related to granting provisional extension of affiliation to SD College Hoshiarpurto run add-on course-computer based accounting came up.

Senators including I S Sandhu, Jagwant Singh, Karamjeet Singh and others apprised the House that in the majority of the affiliated, the management is not paying salaries to teachers as mentioned in the UGC regulations. The majority of the teachers are either getting Rs 8,000 or Rs 12,000 per month.

Moreover, various B Ed colleges failed to employ six teachers, and five non-teaching staff as required by the norms.
