: Excerpts from a talk with Datla Hanumanta Raju, president, ICSI and NK Jain, secretary & CEO, ICSI:

As the futuristic planning has now come to stay as a hallmark of modern times, the Vision Plan 2020 of the ICSI is being envisioned by a group of experts.

“Students being the future of the profession, our priority would be to ensure that students services are more effective and efficient. Institute will make endeavour to see that they are energised and made knowledgeable and appropriately skilled, so that they are able to provide exacting solutions to corporates”. In this direction, the institute has implemented new syllabus and a new training template is being implemented. The institute has also set up ICSI Students Education Fund Trust to provide financial assistance to economically backward students with good academic record.

Web-based e-learning:

With a view to spreading the reach of the CS Course into smaller towns, the institute had launched web-based e-learning programme for the CS Foundation Programme. The response from the students has been encouraging. The Modules for Executive Programme are being finalised and will be launched shortly and we expect that more students will make use of the e-learning facilities. The reach of the Career Awareness programmes would be expanded to attract more students into the professional fold.

Every profession is recognised and identified with the quality and capabilities of its members. It would be our endeavour to intensify the efforts for capacity building of company secretaries in new and emerging areas, and efforts would be made to launch PMQ course in Competition Law and Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring, which have already been approved by the council of the institute. In addition, the focus would be on organising short term courses and collaborative programmes to provide exposure to our members in diversified areas.

Capacity building for members in newer areas being the focal point the Institute will organise chain programmes in the area of banking, NCLT, advocacy, service tax, etc. It has also been decided to organise programmes in collaboration with National Foundation for Corporate Governance on topics such as Corporate Risk Management Systems; Sustainability Accounting & Reporting; Chain Workshops on Corporate Governance; and New Companies Bill.

Role of company secretaries

For the CS profession, the current scenario provides ample opportunities for carrying forward the torch of good corporate governance and promoting CS professionals as integrated corporate managers. The Companies Bill, 2008 equates company secretary with the CEO and CFO. Corporate...
