A 78-year-old American national was robbed by four unidentified persons at Horniman Circle on Sunday. MRA Marg police said the incident occurred around 2.30 pm.

“The complainant, Anthony Camport was on his way from Asiatic Library to Taj Mahal Palace, where he was staying, along with his wife in a taxi when it developed a snag. The driver parked the car and went to look for a mechanic, while the Camports exited the taxi and waited. Two men approached Camport posing as beggars, bent down and caught hold of his legs. Two other men came from behind, stole his wallet from his back pocket and fled, along with the first two,” said senior inspector Padmakar Juikar.

“The modus operandi was used in similar offences in the jurisdictions of MRA Marg, Cuffe Parade and Marine Drive police stations. We had recently arrested a person in connection with such an offence and will pick him up again for questioning,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (South region) Krishna Prakash.

Police said Camport’s wallet contained Rs 4,000, traveller’s cheques worth $500, a credit card and his passport. He was given a copy of the FIR registered by the police, after which he left for New York. He was in India on vacation, police said.
