Uproar in LS over Rajiv Trust land

The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice amidst acrimonious scenes after former BJP president Rajnath Singh raised the issue of allotment of land to the Rajiv Gandhi Trust in Gurgaon.

Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the House after finding it difficult to continue question hour due to slogan-shouting by BJP MPs. The second adjournment came during zero hour, following a slanging match between Congress and BJP MPs.

After the House met, Singh asked the Speaker to take up his notice for adjournment of question hour. Kumar promised to let him speak first during zero hour, but Singh did not agree; Congress MPs on the other hand insisted on question hour.

In the din from the treasury benches, Singh said, “I would like to submit that some influential people of the Congress party, through a trust, have applied pressure to grab the land of farmers.”

BJP members stood up and shouted slogans, even as the Speaker started with questions. Question-answer and slogan-shouting went on simultaneously for a while. BJP members, determined to stall proceedings, then moved to to the well.

MPs of other NDA partners, including JD-U chief Sharad Yadav, too stood up. He was seen going up to SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, apparently asking him to join them. Thereafter, SP MPs too stood up and began protesting. The Speaker adjourned the House till noon.
