UP Power corp fined for sending bill to nonexistent connection

The Allahabad High Court has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the UP Power Corporation for sending a bill of over Rs 90,000 to a person without even providing him with a connection.
The Lucknow bench, comprising justices Devi Prasad Singh and Sudhir Kumar Saxena, fined the corporation yesterday on petition of a Lucknow resident Om Narain Sahu.
The court also directed the corporation to constitute a committee to provide electricity connections in a fixed timeframe.
Petitioner Sahu had applied for a new connection on August 21, 1991 and also deposited the requisite amount for the same.
However, he did not get the connection.
On May 31, 1996 he received a demand letter of the electricity department of Rs 95,782.
