United Spirits (USL), India’s largest liquor company, on Wednesday appointed Anand Kripalu as its chief executive from May 1, marking a shift for the company that has so far been headed by UB Group veterans.

Kripalu had joined USL last October as CEO-designate, soon after its acquisition by British drinks giant Diageo. He was formerly MD at Cadbury India, which has now been renamed as Mondelez India Foods.

Kripalu succeeds Ashok Capoor who is retiring after 22 years with Vijay Mallya’s UB Group of which he spent the last three years as USL’s president and MD. “Capoor will, thereafter, assume the role of president (strategy) of the company for a year from May 1,” said a communication from USL to the stock exchanges, after a board meeting on Wednesday.

“The board of directors is yet to consider Kripalu’s induction to the board as a director or his appointment as the managing director of the company, both of which will be promptly notified to the stock exchanges once they have been considered and approved by the board,” it said. Kripalu, an alumus of IIT Madras and IIM Calcutta, has over 30 years of experience in the FMCG business, most of it at Unilever.
