The Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) has received over 4,000 complaints of damaged meters in the past month. In fact it has received so many complaints that the power company doesn’t have enough meters in stock to replace the damaged meters and is now asking people to buy their own from the market.

According to officials, the office of executive engineer (UHBVN), which replaces the damaged meters has a stock of 200-250 meters.

However Director projects (UHBVN) A K Grover, said that they had enough meters. “We have many stores in the 11 districts and it is the job of the field agencies to replace the meters. We can buy the meters on bulk after issuing the bids.”

Executive Engineer (UHBVN) D S Danda, however, said: “We are asking new consumers and those whose meters are damaged to buy the new ones from the market. Over 70 percent of our new consumers buy the meters from the market.”

Officials said that as of now the power company is charging flat rates from the residents whose meters are damaged. “The UHBVN is charging a flat rate of 3 KW on the single-phase line user and 8 KW on the 3-phase line user,” said Danda, adding that a new meter can be bought for Rs 1,600 to Rs 3,800.

Meanwhile, officials said that consumers are being asked by UHBVN to buy meters from onlyselect companies that have been approved by the government.
