Whats the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about a car? Mostly the answer is looks but it is obvious that the successive answers stand on the lines of mileage, speed, pick up, braking, etc. One thing that connects all this, one thing that acts as the heart and soul of any car is the engine. While all of the engine manufacturing is limited due to the unimaginable complexity of the design dynamics, the rarity of models makes every new entry even more auspicious. Developing a new engine is hence, no ordinary feat. While countries like Japan and USA are prominent in automobile engine manufacturing, these designs are lately more focussed on aspects dedicated to Indian demographic. The engines are more fuel efficiency oriented rather than sheer acceleration and performance attributes. This can be observed in most entry level vehicles, which are priced at under 10 lakhs. This trend was started by Fordís EcoBoost engine and the trend was also observed in the Volkswagenís GT TSI. Talking about latest advancements of engines in India, in the first quarter of 2014, two of the major automobile companies announced new engines that are expected to take their companies to hopefully even higher levels, if there are any. These engines are the Tata Motorís Revotron engine and the General Motorís EcoTec. Lets see the other engines in the market as of now.
Though Ford introduced EcoBoost internationally in 2009, it reached India in 2013 powering its latest success EcoSport. EcoBoost engine is to Ford what VTEC engines is to Honda. Improving the fuel economy by 20%, this turbo charged engine's block is of cast iron instead of aluminium which assures up to 50% faster warm-up. The flywheel is fitted in a slight unbalanced alignment so so as to neutralize the natural vibrations produced by the 3-cylinder engine. This nullifies the usage of a balance shaft as with the three pot engines.
The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is capable of delivering power output in two states, namely, 99bhp and 123bhp. The family of EcoBoost powerplants includes 1.0-litre, 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre, 2.0-litre, 2.3-liter (debuted in the 2015 Mustang) and high performance 3.5-litre V6 engines. And the demand is nowhere near to end. Recently, as of September 2013, the automaker rolled out its 2 Millionth EcoBoost engine.
Tata Motors Revotron:
With the increasing small displacement turbocharged engines, Tata has also announced its own fleet of Turbocharged engines named as Revotron. The first powerplant in the lineup is the 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-intercooled, Multi-Point Fuel Injected (MPFI) petrol motor which works on the drive-by-wire technology. The engine block is made of cast iron and features multiple drive mode, a first in the segment! The engine generates 83.8bhp and maximum torque of 140Nm. The Revotron family follows Euro IV and BS IV emissions norms and can also be coupled with CNG.
General Motor's EcoTec:
In an attempt to win the market share, GM got into the eco friendly brandwagon with the new family of EcoTec engine which is expected to be used in the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze. The line-up includes a 1.0 liter three cylinders, direct-injected, turbocharged motor followed by 10 different engines ranging from three to four cylinder in 1.0 to 1.5-liter configuration. The 1.0-liter engine is present in two power options, 88.8bhp and 113bhp. EcoTec is an all-aluminium construction and the technologies incorporated in engine are continuous variable valve timing, counter balance shaft dipped in oil sump and exhaust manifold integrated in the cylinder head. Compatibility of the engine extends to CNG, FlexFuel and Hybrid technologies.
Volkswagen 1.2 GT TSI:
The TSI engine has been powering some of VWs best sellers such as Polo and Passat. The TSI (Turbo Stratified Injection) motors basically combine turbocharging with direct-injection. The TSI family includes 1.2-liter, 1.4-liter and 1.8-liter engines.
Maruti Suzuki Turbocharged engine in YRA
With the whole world drifting towards small capacity turbo induced motors, Maruti Suzuki is not one to sit back and relax. Rumour has it that the company is working on a Direct-Injected Turbo-Charged (DiCT) powerplants for the upcoming hatch code-named 'YRA' (which is expected to be placed above Swift). This 1.0 liter turbo-charged petrol engine is expected to offer a maximum output of 90bhp. If all goes well, these just might be used to power even the showstoppers such as Swift and Ertiga.
With so many companies working on innovative ways to fit consumersí expectations, despite no direct customization, consumers are indeed the kings in automobile design. The eco friendly vehicle designs, the reduced fuel emissions in engines, diesel engines making lesser noise, petrol engines improving their fuel efficiency and many more such issues are comfortably being tackled by these firms and many others. All of whose scientists down at their own R&D labs are working as we speak, to create the next big thing in automobiles.
