A 23-year-old tribal girl was allegedly gang raped after her family refused to give in to the extortion demand of the local goons.
According to a police complaint filed yesterday, on the night of November 4, nine persons first entered into an altercation with the victim’s family members over the latter’s repeated refusal to pay extortion amount for the “missing cycles in the area”, which the goons had held the family responsible for.
The complaint, lodged by the mother, says the youths beat up her and her son and abducted her daughter to a nearby place where nine people took turns to rape her.
Birbhum Superintendent of Police C Sudhakar conceded that the rape incident took place three days ago and additional SP Prasanta Kumar informed that one person has been arrested so far.
“We cannot divulge details for the sake of investigation,” Kumar said, while also refusing to inform if the medical test of the girl had confirmed rape.
Police sources, however, said that the accused arrested has been charged for violence and not rape. Family members allege that police are trying to cover up the incident. The girl has been admitted to Suri Sadar Hospital.
The victim comes from a lower-middle-class family. She had lost her father a few years ago and is married. She had come to her mother’s place for the pujas.
