An elephant gatecrashed the wedding of the heir of Virgin group's founder-chairman Sir Richard Branson, and got drunk on a fruit of a tree under which the bride and the groom said their vows.

The elephant got drunk on the fermented fruit of the sacred marula tree, under which Branson's son Sam tied the knot with society beauty Isabella Calthorpe at a South African game reserve, the Sun reports.

According to sources, the tipsy elephant then took giant bites out of the wedding cake, which was elaborately decorated with strawberries and pieces of exotic fruit, and smashed and upturned tables before getting shooed away by the rangers from the open-air wedding reception.

The marriage has been dubbed the 'nearly royal wedding' because of its glamorous guest list which includes actress Kate Winslet, who is married to Branson''s nephew Ned Rocknroll, and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie The reception was held on a hill called Nelson's Koppie at the Inyati Game Reserve, the report added.
