Kapur Singh from Shingwa Khas village in Hisar was talk of the show in the four-day state-level livestock championship, which began in Muktsar on Tuesday. His prized possession was a Murrah-breed buffalo, which he had nurtured for more than three years.

“People are ready to pay Rs 19 lakh to buy this buffalo, but I have demanded Rs 25 lakh. This animal gives 28 kg of milk daily and I sell it for more than Rs 45 a kg. I had purchased it for Rs 2.5 lakh three years ago,” Kapur said. Kapur had come with the animal to take part in the breed and milking competition.

Balwant Singh of Chak Hira Singh Wala village in Bathinda had come to the competition with two Marwadi varieties of foals, which he had purchased for Rs 15 lakh. “I have more than 10 such animals at home but brought the best ones here. This is my passion and price is not a factor. The farmers were very tight-lipped about the actual price of a fully grown horse if someone want to purchase. However, they gave an indication that a good marwadi breed can be sold for more than a crore,” said Singh.

The livestock championship, where locals from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are participating, hosted breed shows for dogs, horses, buffaloes and cows on the first day.
