New Delhi: 40 of the UPA’s 78 ministers are fresh faces who did not figure in the Government last time.

Tamil Nadu

M K Azhagiri 59, DMK

The elder son of DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, once a rank outsider in politics, has risen in stature in his party in the past couple of years. Based in Madurai, he has now been given charge of party affairs in the southern districts. Earlier, he did not have any formal responsibility nor did he come to the

forefront. In fact, party members were directed not to have any connections with him when he ensured the defeat of a number of party candidates in 2001 Assembly and local body elections. But after three by-elections in and around Madurai region since 2006 — all won by DMK and allies — and the recent developments in the ruling family have led to his emergence. First came the post of DMK organising secretary for south districts, a powerful post with 10 Lok Sabha and 60 Assembly constituencies under his control. This election, the DMK and allies just lost one seat from the region, increasing the demand in the party to reward him with a cabinet post in Delhi.

S Jagathrakshakan 61, DMK

A prominent educationalist and member of the influential Vanniyar community, Jagathrakshakan, inducted as an MoS, made his electoral debut under MGR’s AIADMK in 1980 and entered the Lok Sabha five years later. After MGR’s death, he stayed away from active politics, only to return in 1999 as a candidate of MGR Kazhagam, a splinter group of which he was the general secretary. He contested under the DMK symbol and found himself in a host of House committees till his term ended in 2004. It was his opposition to S Ramadoss and his party PMK that made Jagathrakshakan closer to the DMK leadership in the recent past. In the run-up to the elections, he merged his outfit with the DMK and was rewarded with a ticket from Arakkonam constituency.

D Napoleon 46, DMK

When DMK was looking for a replacement for A Raja from the Perambalur seat after he moved to Nilgiris (reserved) constituency, actor D Napoleon was not among the frontrunners. But he made it to the list and also won his first Lok Sabha election. Though a first-time MP, Napoleon is not new to politics. Before he became an actor and adopted the...

Mr.Kumar, what is the meaning of these words "Thank God well known tainted ones are out for the time being" . what about azhagiri. do you think that he is not tainted. No one can be more corrupted and a murderer than Azhagiri. I think you are not in Madurai or tamil nadu. God bless you

A good beginning for Manmohan Singh with a mixed bag but more or less maintaining the average age of Ministers. Isn't it the compulsion of the ruling party that the much hyped 'YOUTH ANGLE below EXPECTATION' has been left behind at the cost of 'coalition compulsion’ where controversial ministers had to be accommodated and one or two may follow? Thank God well known tainted ones are out for the time being.

Why Muslim League can't be secular? If a name says it's charector then BJP and RSS should be the most secular parties!!!!!!. Deeds are the chriteria to decide what is what and who is who. ML never standed against secular policies and always stood in the mainstream.

Daughter-in-law, son-in-law, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, nephew, uncle, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and all endless in-laws......... and finally the Italian Antonio Maino's sycophants and ....lickers! Sure, new look team, we can also call "sycophants team". Secular team? What is E. Ahmed of "Muslim League" doing in 'secular' govt.? Is "Muslim League" a "Secular" party? How about if a party formed as "Hindu" party? Will you be ready to call it as "secular" or as usual the "Hindu communal" party? Now shut your mouth, you have no moral right to call it "secular" govt. This is the fate of the country however!

M.K.Azhagiri would perform well in whatever ministry he would be handling. He is ambitious to erase his bad image and want to do good things to stay in competition with his family men -Stalin, Maran and Kanimozhi.During election campaign, he was seen as very modest and humble. When everyone in the CPI M beleived that the once convicted Madhani has become Secular, why not the Indian public wait to see Mr.Azhagiri in action.

In India the ability of person is not the criteria to become minister. Its the caste-religion-family etc decides the factors. Moreover "chamachas" (called loyalists) of Italian sonia madam

I dont understand why people still accept the US as a standard in determining any issue. If the Indian system is not right, it must be rectified. Not compared to a system that is controlled by lobbyists and capitalists and has proved to be a total failure in all departments - whether it be foreign policy or economics.

Dee,We can feel your pain and concern. Many like you and we are often helpless.US citizens are well educated and representatives are elected with due thought - In general. In India, it is prety face, caste, regionalism, emotions etc => All deadly factors elect representative. Otherwise, after Mumbai case, how come Deshmukh was elected??? Can we imagine this in US? We are NOT at all a democracy in spirit.MMS is honest and capable and classic example is making Vilasrao who was sacked(he did'nt resign his own), a Cabinet Minister now. That is why i say, there is hardly any difference between, highly educated people and least educated people in Indian Political Setup.

In the end, loyality and vote bank politics has emerged as the main criteria for cabinet selection. How does one otherwise explain the selection of Vilasrao Deshmukh and K.V.Thomas in the ministry. There are many new faces from allies like DMK and TC but most of these MP's have won election from their state by exploiting regional and religious sentiments.
