Tenements to have women as joint owners
In its proposal tabled in the standing committee, the civic administration has submitted the draft of the agreement to be signed between the beneficiary family and the PMC for the purpose. “The PMC has begun allotment of tenements to slum-dwellers eligible under the BSUP scheme. However, the PMC needs to sign an agreement with the beneficiaries and the same has been tabled for approval,” said Poonam Mehta, special officer, BSUP.
As per the agreement, the PMC will register the tenement allotted to the beneficiary family jointly in the name of the owner of the hut and a woman of his family. “We have to register the allotted tenement in the name of the beneficiary family. Thus, a decision was deliberately taken to register it jointly in the names of the head of the family and a woman of the family,” she said.
To achieve the objective of women’s empowerment, Mehta added, the first name on the agreement will be of the woman nominated by the beneficiary family, followed by the head male member. “The woman can be wife, mother or daughter of the family,” she said, adding that it would be in the extreme case of no woman in the family
