Mumbai: : As part of its marketing strategy, the Bangalore-based Tencel Ltd is planning to supply its product range to leading textile majors in India.

For the purpose, the company is currently in talks with Madura Garments, Raymond Apparel Group, Pantaloon Retail India Ltd, Arvind Mills Ltd, Levis and Dockers, informs Mr Prem Sandhwani, country manager, Tencel Ltd.

Says Mr Sandhwani: “With the move, we hope to supply 300 to 500 tonne of tencel silk, wool, lycra, knit and woven fabrics in India, within a year.”

At present, Tencel, a member of the Acordis Group imports around 500 tonne of tencel fibres from UK-based Acordis Fibres Holdings Ltd. After procuring tencel fibres from Acordis, Tencel supplies the fibres to companies such as Rajasthan Spinning & Weaving Mills, Arvind Mills, Ashima, Mafatlal Group and Nahar Group in India. On the company’s expansion plans, says Mr Sandhwani:”Since the tencel fabric sales is growing every year at the rate of 50 per cent in India and 30 per cent globally, Acordis Fibres Holdings which currently produces 55,000 tonne of tencel fibres in UK is planning to increase its capacity of supplying tencel fibres to 1,000 tonne to India, within a year.”

According to Mr Sandhwani, with this move the company hopes the sale of tencel fabric to grow at the same rate for the next two to three years.

“As of now, we do not have any plans to set-up a manufacturing base for tencel fibres in the Indian market, but once we meet up the 1,000 tonne sales mark for tencel fibres in India, we may consider the unit to be set-up for tencel fibres. However, it is too early to decide,” he adds.

In order to promote its entire range of tencel fabrics in the Indian market, Tencel Ltd is planning to host a number of three ground events in Delhi termed as “Tencel Fabric Preview”, this year, informs Mr Sandhwani.
