Teachers want syllabus cut, Board says no way
Teachers claim students are unable to cope with the changes and many students fared poorly in the semester exams. The syllabus for physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology was upgraded according to the core syllabus prepared by the Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE). The new syllabus, largely based on CBSE curriculum, is expected to prepare junior college students for examinations like JEE and AIEEE. “We submitted a proposal to the state government for making changes in the upgraded syllabus of class XI and XII mathematics. Once the state government gives its nod, the revision will be effective from 2013-14 academic year. The syllabi for chemistry, biology and physics are appropriate and were upgraded keeping in mind the standard of national competitive exams. Hence, we are not making any changes to the new science syllabi,”said Kalyan Gawade, research officer of MSBSHSE.
Teachers feel the board must review the science syllabi and omit a few chapters. “Students are expected to study from two books for one paper. The portion is new and quite different. Students are facing problems. The board should review science syllabus, taking views of students and teachers,” said Bhuvaneshwari R, chemistry teacher at SIWS college at Wadala.
