With its just introduced Revotron 1.2T, an indigenous turbocharged petrol engine, Tata Motors cherishes hopes of enriching its portfolio as well as its revenue. The engine is part of the Revotron series that, “will power future models in the passenger vehicle market”, says Tata Motors. Described as 'next-generation petrol engine', Revotron 1.2T will be used in the models that Tata will exhibit in the 2014 Auto Expo.

What does Tata Motors hope to achieve? The objective is clear from the name of the engine itself – Revotron – an amalgamation of 'revolution' and the French word “tronel”, meaning ‘balance'. Tata's venture with this engine is to bring a revolution in 'driving manoeuvrability' and maintain a balance in terms of power and fuel efficiency. The automobile industry, especially in India, has a special space for the vehicles that exhibit more power and consume less fuel. That's why most of Tata's vehicles with diesel engines have hit huge sales figures. If the Revotron Series engines do justice to the intention of the manufacturer, chances are quite high that there will be a revolution in the sales figures of the Tata Motors' vehicles.

Next, we look at the approach and the basics. Before the making of this engine, Tata Motors had taken into consideration the need and expectations of consumers who have been generally happy with its diesel engine vehicles. If not dissatisfied, they have not been similarly happy with Tata's petrol engine vehicles. The prime reason for the consumers' lack of interest in Tata Motors petrol vehicles is that they do not churn out as much power as its competitors deliver. Keeping this note in consideration, Tata Motors has developed the concept of the Turbocharged Intercooled Multi-point Fuel Injected (MPFi) Petrol Engine, Revotron 1.2T. The other engines of the Revotron Series will include 3-and 4-cylinder petrol engines to ensure excellent performance and superior fuel efficiency.

In addition to feedback from the car owners, auto enthusiasts and experts from various corners of the world, Tata Motors has also taken into consideration “their driving habits followed by extensive testing in grueling climatic conditions in India as well as in countries like the UK and Korea.” The company has received inputs from eminent global players in the fields of combustion, boosting, friction and calibration. It has also worked closely with
