LASHING out at the Congress-led UPA government “for interfering in religious affairs of Sikhs,” Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday said the amendment in Gurdwara Act, proposed by the Shiela Dikshit government was against the basic spirit of the Constitution as delaying elections beyond a five year term was anti-democratic.

He also slammed the Congress party for “colluding with the Sarna group to delay the Gurdwara elections”and preventing Sikhs in Delhi from exercising their franchise. Sukhbir said Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit fears that a drubbing for the Sarna’s would have a direct impact on the Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections and and added that Sikhs would not allow the Congress to meddle in the community’s affairs.

Speaking to the media after inaugurating a Rs 5.5 crore 66 KVA sub-station at Maula Wahid and inducting Punjab Pradesh Congress Party Secretary Captain R S Pathania into the SAD fold at Padhiana, Sukhbir said would soon announce a special development and industrial package for the development of Kandi areas. He added that a Rs 10,000-crore development plan for 147 towns, particularly those in kandi areas, would ensure integrated development including providing complete sewerage, water supply, road network and solid waste management.
