: The journey was much more enjoyable than being there,’’ Sudha Murthy, wife of NR Narayana Murthy says about life before Infosys. Those who have known Sudha, would realise that the ‘journey’ was one of a kind, creating a history of sorts—her career graph has made a difference at almost every significant turn. For the uninitiated: at her first job at Telco, Sudha Kulkarni (her maiden name) became the first woman engineer at the shop floor of the company. Later she took part in initiating India’s ‘intellectual revolution,’ when Narayana Murthy began Infosys with the seed money from her ‘rainy-day savings’ (her name for savings meant for needy days) stored in a kitchen almirah. Now as a writer and the chairperson of the philanthropic organisation, Infosys Foundation, she is more famous as a teacher and a social activist.

In the third-floor office of Infosys Foundation in Bangalore, Sudha comes across as a teacher, engineer, writer, philanthropist and corporate—all rolled into one. The essence of success in every role has been universal, says Sudha. ‘‘Whatever you do, do it to your best. At every job, my motto has been the same—to be honest and sincere to your profession when you are a subordinate and when you are boss, be professional but care for your subordinates. As a mother, be there when your children are home and you are needed.’’

Sudha Murthy’s shot to fame accidentally, every time. As a fresh engineering graduate, she wrote a letter to JRD Tata pointing out that barring women applicants from jobs at Telco was injustice. Little did the girl from north Karnataka imagine that the company would respond to her letter of grievance and summon her for an interview. ‘‘At that time, I was preparing to go abroad for further studies. I wrote the letter to point out that denying a job to an able woman engineer on the basis of gender was injustice. Later I joined Telco because after that letter I felt I was morally responsible to take up the offer,’’ she says.

I feel that when we have abundance of money its only to serve people. And Sudha is one whom I always adore as one of the greatest sanctum representatives of Indian women. As far as I've seen managing home is one of the toughest jobs in this world and no man can rise a child as a woman does. I personally take the example of my mother having struggled and struggling so much in having brought me up and inculcating values. As Sudha's hubby told, it is only standing on her career that he had risen to such great heights, and I feel that he is a person of realization. At this moment I'd like to share a revelation which I had. All the major inventions of the world are done on one single basis - helping mankind. Edison never started his research on electric lamp just to invent it. Underneath his research there was a burning desire to help people get out of darkness. Similarly let us take Sudha's own example - her first career work - the shop floor Executive(for convenience sake!!). She'd have known the contributions of Frederick Winslow Taylor. FW Taylor invented the scientific management and the piece rate basis. Only people who had ready Taylor completely could understand the man behind. He never arrived at scientific management and piece rate invention on an objective to improve work or worker productivity. To tell you honestly, he never had such objectives of improving productivity or quality of work. At that period then prevailing, FW Taylor saw the toils of workers in shop floor. The workers toiled all day long and their suffering burnt his heart like anything. Unable to bear this suffering Taylor wanted to bring them out of this nasty way of working, which lead him to think about the variable pay scheme and incentive.Coming back here as we see both Sudha and Narayana Murthy's lives we can see that, had Sudha gone to improve her career it would have benefited the whole of India...given the fact that she had such a compassionate heart, her creativity would have made greater inventions as her heart would have undoubtedly brought an Edison or a Tesla out of her and she would have gone to leaps and bounds in technological inventions. The heart always surpasses the brain and her contribution would have definitely surpassed her hubby's. Even now, she has made a living example out of herself and taught the greatest teaching to women of India in this cultural transformation age. I feel that it is more of women's role in the society which represents the rise or downfall of it. And Sudha is the best example of women's role in society. If ever I get a chance to meet her I wish to prostrate in her feet and ask her to give me a boon for possessing such a heart like her own which can surpass beyond everything, coz such a heart has not come out of her own effort. Such persons are a happening.

I am very sorry that I can't express my feelings after reading the sayings of Mrs.Murthy. I since from my childhood was very much interested in helping others and I use to get some sort of comfort and satisfaction as a course of that. I was very thankful to one and all who r responsible for making these kind of people's sayings available to an ordinary person like me. I wish all the family members of Mrs.SudhaMurthy ji all the great success and joy. I remind U the family includes all the people from INDIA.... JaiHind..
