BJP affiliated Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), managed to clinch the prestigious Delhi University Student Union's (DUSU) president post, after a gap of five years, from the Congress allied National Students' Union of India (NSUI).
ABVP's Nupur Sharma defeated NSUI's Sonia Sapra by 1,639 votes, to become the new DUSU president.
Nupur Sharma talks to Ashok Kumar of Expressindia.
Will you call it the victory of ABVP, or is it your personal victory, given the fact that NSUI has swept three seats out of a total of four?
Definitely it is the victory of Parishad (ABVP). As far as organisations are concerned both (NSUI & ABVP) are strong. It also depends on which candidate is liked by the students.
Why do you think NSUI could not make it for the fourth time, to the DUSU president’s post?
May be they could not convince the students about their programmes. I have been there for five years in the campus and that helped better associate with the students.
What was the biggest factor that worked in your favour?
The biggest factor was my association with ABVP.
How long has been your association with ABVP?
Since 2003, I am a member of the ABVP but not an activist in the real sense of the word.
Four five months ago, ABVP approached me and asked if I was ready to take the responsibility.
Whom would you like to attribute your success to?
I would like to attribute my success to the students who elected me. I would like to thank those who believed in me.
Tell us about the family support you got during the elections?
My family was very supportive of me all through. During the election campaign, I used to leave my home around 7 in the morning and would return by 2 in the night. I really appreciate my family for having the patience to bear with my erratic schedule.
Why do you think was the voter turnout very low in these elections? Is it because students have no love lost for the elections?
Students are not loosing the interest in the elections. On the contrary, they are losing faith in the system. It may be because DUSU have not been able to work, according to the expectations of the students. I am going to work for students and not for myself.
