Press Council Chairman Markandey Katju today clarified that his remark '90 per cent of Indians are fools' was meant to awaken people to the realities of social evils like casteism, communalism in the country.

"I have been misquoted in the press reports, but it is true that I have said that 90 per cent Indians (not all) are fools. My intention in saying so was not to hurt anyone but to awaken people to the realities, that is, the widespread casteism, communalism, superstitions, and other backward traits in the mindset of a large section of our people which is blocking our progress and keeping us poor," Katju today said in a mail to students Tanaya and Aditya.

The two students had reportedly sent a legal notice to the PCI chairman for making the remark.

"The figure 90 per cent is not a mathematical figure, it simply means that in my opinion a large proportion of Indians (and again I repeat, not all) are fools," Katju said.

"I never named you, nor any community, caste, or sect, and I never said that you are in the category of 90 per cent.

Why Fear Katju's words.

Even if we consider all Indians, its not wrong. Because if every Indian honestly recalls all the things we have dealt with in our life we may soon discover we have definitely fallen prey to the evils pointed out by Katju. Dont you treat your garbage collector, labor or house servant with a similar attitude in some or more ways? Why fear accepting ourselves. The proof that we have a sentiment of hatred for our neighbors (next door, far off or neighbouring state), is the proof of statement of Katju. These kids who have sent legal notice might be feeling brave enough but did not know how it reflected upon their upbringing and education and their developed prejudice.

Mr.katju has hit the bull's eye.We admire him that at least there are people like him and others like Anna hazare & Kejrival who have the guts to call spade a spade. Our Indian society's greatness is noticed only in the school books now.The reality is shocking. If we want to improve then first & foremost have to accept the reality.

Mr Katju is right

When an idiot was called as an idiot, he will not agree. he will fight tooth and nail to prove himself/herself as an idiot. At the outset we may get hurt on reading the views of Mr.Katju. He is not an ordinary person. On examination of what was going in this country, I as a citizen of this great land have no hesitation to agree to the views of Mr Katju. In support we may quote thousands of things to tell majority of Indians are idiots of first order else how can we elect Ms Jayalalitha after knowing that she was corrupt to the core and amassed wealth to the tune of more than 300 cores. Majority of the people who voted recently for YRCP were aware of the corruption of Mr Jagan mohan reddy. They only argue that who is honest politician. Many educated knew that Shri Jayaprakash Narayana is an honest politician and Loksatta is a party fighting against corruption, yet they do not vote for him. Average Indian is susceptible for religion/community/caste/language barriers which politici
