Kanpur: Unable to take the pressure of high expectations, seven students of IIT Kanpur committed suicide in the past four years, the latest being G Suman who took the extreme step after failing to get a job.

Director of IIT Kanpur Sanjay Govind Dhande said the inability to get selected during a campus recruitment despite being a promising student drove Suman, an M-tech student of electrical engineering from Andhra Pradesh, to take the drastic step.

Dhande said that students get depressed after they are unable to meet expectations. They get stressed and crack under pressure of studies.

"Mental tension and stress has been the key reason behind the suicides committed by the seven students in the last four years," he said.

Two psychologists were deputed on the campus premises, yoga centres were being run and regular counselling provided to students but still such incidents were taking place, he said.

Last year, a B.Tech student Toya Chatterjee had committed suicide a day before the convocation ceremony after she failed in her fourth semester exams.

Another student -- Prashant Kumar had killed himself apparently as he could not bear the pressure of studies.

In 2006-07, four students -- J Bhardwaj, Abhilash Pillai , Sailesh Sharma had taken the extreme step.

Swapnil Sharma had committed suicide in 2005 and the management of the institute had held mental stress as the main reason behind the death.

It is very unfortunate to have lost such young and brilliant brains at IITs for want of placements. Instead, they ought to have become entrepreneurs like somme IIM grads. Besides academics, new generation needs close counseling and soft skills training to live on their feet. I sympathise with their parents who are put to such shocks. Will the Govt do something serious to avoid these?
