New Delhi, December 2: : Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members in Lok Sabha on Monday sought strict action against industrialists who have failed to return huge bank loans and demanded seizure of their non-performing assets to ensure debt recovery.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Congress member of Parliament (MP) Laxman Singh quoting a newspaper report said Rs 1,10,000 crore had been ‘looted’ by these industrialists from various banks.

“This must stop and the Centre should make all efforts including enacting a law to recover the loans. There should be a full debate in the house on the matter,” Singh said, adding debt recovery tribunals should be set up in all states.

Supporting the Congress member’s contention, BJP MP Shivraj Singh Chauhan associated himself with the issue.

Rebel Trinamool Congress member Ajit Kumar Panja and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Somnath Chatterjee demanded central intervention to halt closure of two state-owned printing presses in Kolkata and one in Guwahati, alleging these public sector undertakings (PSUs) were being allowed to become sick by giving government orders to private printers.

Supply of printed forms issued by various government departments would be seriously affected if the presses were closed down by April next year, they said.

Responding to the members’ concern, parliamentary affairs minister Pramod Mahajan assured them that he would convey their demand to the concerned department.

Jagmeet Singh Brar (Congress) wanted the government to take Opposition parties into confidence while implementing Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s announcement regarding linking of major rivers to find a permanent solution to water disputes among states. (PTI)
