Senior Supreme Court Advocate Harish Salve on Saturday sent a notice to Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar asking him to stop the “unwholesome practice” of disrupting traffic to give passage to VIPs. He said the “practice” could attract legal action.

The notice was sent after the police blocked traffic to ensure smooth movement of VIPs for the funeral of former prime minister

I K Gujral. Salve said the Delhi Police violated constitutional rights guaranteed to citizens by “indiscriminately” closing arterial roads — without notice and without putting alternative road diversions — to facilitate the movement of VIPs.

The letter said this violated Article 14 and the basic structure of the Constitution. “It is clear from the attitude of the Delhi Police that it has not shaken off its old pre-colonial attitude of serving the Raj,” the letter said.

Salve said traffic officers were seldom deployed to ease congestion, but there was no dearth of personnel for VIP movement.

Kumar said he is yet to receive the letter. Salve has marked a copy of the letter to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Union Home Minister and the Attorney General.

I fully agree with Mr. Salve. The Police must have provided for alternate traffic arrangement with proper notice. This troublesome practice must stop at the earliest.

Absolutely Right

He is very much right..I share the daily experience with you. On ITO W-Point we have to wait daily for 25-30 minutes to take right turn towards Trans-Yamuna, because carcade of CM passes that route between 6:10 to 6:30 & also also few Senior Delhi Police Officer, for all these things traffic is being stopped...& when they pass LG's Carcade comes from Delhi Gate side. The traffic Jam on Tilak Marg extends upto India Gate. Anybody can witness such Chaos on that road between 6-7 PM Daily.
