The Calcutta High Court today held that no new criterion could be included in the selection process for the recruitment of constables in Kolkata Police which was not mentioned in the rules earlier.

From 1994 to 2003, Kolkata Police recruited constables in several batches and the process was challenged by 96 petitioners who failed in the selection process.

According to the rule framed in 1962, criterion of selecting the candidate was that they should be strong and healthy men aged between 18 and 25 years. They should preferably be able to read and write in the vernacular and have the minimum specified measurements with respect to the height, chest and weight.

On July 4,1994, the Kolkata Police commissioner issued a notification for the inclusion of some criteria for the selection of constables. The petitioners contended that the inclusion of these provisions was illegal as it was not mentioned in the rule framed in 1962.
