States against single medical regulator: Azad

The Centre on Monday told the Rajya Sabha that its proposal to set up an overarching body for regulating medical education in the country had been opposed by many states.
Speaking at the end of a debate on the Medical Council of India (Amendment) Bill, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said his ministry would convey the states’ views to the HRD Ministry.
The proposed body is to regulate not just medical colleges, but also institutions for nursing, dentistry, and paramedics. The issue has seen Health and HRD ministries take opposite stands and both are still working on their individual proposals.
