State to start three medical colleges
“The state has given clearance to set up three government medical colleges in Gondia, Chandrapur and Baramati with a capacity of 100 students each. Each of these colleges will have a 500-bed hospital,” deputy secretary of the medical education department A M Atram said.
The state will make provisions for funding these colleges.
The government had in 2009 made an announcement about setting up of these colleges. However, no action had been taken since then.
The formal announcement from the Medical and Education Department was made on January 3.
At present, there are 43 medical colleges in the state with 5,195 students. The state government runs 14 of these colleges while the Centre runs two. The government colleges have an intake capacity of around 1,600 students.
