The Mumbai-based SP Jain Institute of Management Studies and Research (SPJIMR) has tied up with GE for launching a course termed ‘Specialisation In Services’. The institute is also on the verge of consolidating a similar alliance with IBM to launch a course in information technology.

Says SPJIMR faculty Malini Gupta: “For a long time, B-schools have not been able to provide competitive talent to the services industry. This is because the curriculum in management campuses have been leaning more towards businesses in the traditional industry rather than the service sector.”

And the need to deliver ‘readymade’ talent to these upcoming sectors has prodded the campus to tie up with such companies. The campus hopes to enhance the practical orientation of these courses by making top management professionals of GE conduct workshops for students.

Also, to provide a larger perspective of the service industry as a whole, the campus will be inviting professionals from other companies to conduct such workshops.

The initiative has received the needed attention because of the academic advisory board constituted by SPJIMR. The board comprises heads of different corporate entities.

Apart from GE, there are a host of other corporates with whom the campus is networking for a possible alliance to launch these courses.

Traditionally, the institute has used service industry cases as case learning in the overall curriculum.

However, by launching a full-fledged course that has a ready backing from the industry, the institute is now trying to enhance the employability of students in the service businesses.

The initiative will enhance the practicality of management education that has of late caught up in B-schools.
