Speeding car kills 19-yr-old girl, villagers set it ablaze

A 19-year-old woman was killed on Thursday in Greater Noida’s Kasna village when the vehicle she was travelling in was hit by a speeding Alto coming from the opposite side.

Angry villagers took to the streets and burnt the car, which hit her. The driver of the Alto is absconding, police said.

According to police, the incident was reported at 9.30 am from Kasna near Loksar village, where the woman lived.

The woman , identified as Neelam, was on her way to college in a Tata Magic vehicle along with her friend, Sunita, when the accident happened.

Sunita told police that they were about to reach the school when a speeding Alto, coming from the opposite direction, crashed into their vehicle.

“Since there were trucks standing on one side, there was space for only one vehicle to pass through. On collision, our vehicle toppled and we fell on the road. Neelam’s head hit the road and she suffered serious injuries,” Sunita told Newsline.

“We rushed the two girls to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared Neelam dead on arrival. Sunita sustained minor injuries,” a senior police officer said.

Following the accident, angry villagers burnt the Alto and smashed the windows of trucks parked nearby.

“After the accident, the driver of the car ran away when he saw a mob approaching. They set the Alto on fire and and started pelting stones at trucks parked by the road,” the officer said.
