The son of a former MLA, who was arrested Wednesday by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau and remanded to one-day police custody by a local court for impersonating a SSP of the bureau, had allegedly cheated 70 Punjab government officials in the last nine months.
Sources said VB arrested Rahul Kumar of Dinanagar in Gurdaspur district as he was impersonating an SSP of the bureau since May, 2012 and duped officials of different departments.
ďHe use to call up deputy commissioner offices and from their took mobile numbers of officials of various departments. Then he use to call these officers and identify himself as Thakur Teja Singh, an IPS officer, and used to tell them he is posted as SSP (Vigilance Bureau) and he had received complaints against the officer. He then used to blackmail the officer that he will take action. A deal was stuck and in all the cases he used to tell the officers that he did not want any money. He would tell them that one of his relative was not well and is hospitalised and to deposit the money in an account which he had opened in a government bank branch in Nathpur village,Ē a senior police officer said.
ďThe accused used to ask for Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 and not more than that as then it could be suspicious. About two months back an officer of the food and supplies department approached the VB complaining about the officer and thus the bureau came to know about this fake SSP and from then we tracked this accused,Ē said a senior officer.
The accused had earlier spent fourteen months in jail, from 2008 to 2009, as he had two cases of cheque bounce and another case under Prevention of Corruption Act.
