Son of former MLA impersonates police officer, dupes 70 officials

The son of a former MLA, who was arrested Wednesday by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau and remanded to one-day police custody by a local court for impersonating a SSP of the bureau, had allegedly cheated 70 Punjab government officials in the last nine months.

Sources said VB arrested Rahul Kumar of Dinanagar in Gurdaspur district as he was impersonating an SSP of the bureau since May, 2012 and duped officials of different departments.

“He use to call up deputy commissioner offices and from their took mobile numbers of officials of various departments. Then he use to call these officers and identify himself as Thakur Teja Singh, an IPS officer, and used to tell them he is posted as SSP (Vigilance Bureau) and he had received complaints against the officer. He then used to blackmail the officer that he will take action. A deal was stuck and in all the cases he used to tell the officers that he did not want any money. He would tell them that one of his relative was not well and is hospitalised and to deposit the money in an account which he had opened in a government bank branch in Nathpur village,” a senior police officer said.
