Though recession is the buzz word in the industrial sector, Pune seemed to buck the trend along with four other cities in the country. Surveys and data by multiple job portals put Pune as one of the top five cities in the country in terms of jobs offered. In fact, figures reveal that last year more than three lakh jobs were on offer in Pune with IT, ITES and auto sectors leading the pack.
Surveys point out that as per figures available from various job posting sites, the demand for fresh graduates and people with 0-5 years of experience had risen in the city, while job offers for senior managerial positions for people with 15 years or more experience have shown a sharp decline.
Sudhanshu Arora, country head of Careesma, a job portal, said 2013 started on a sluggish note in terms of hiring, but it picked up towards the year end. Marketing, business development and sales executives were in demand, for IT, ITES and auto sectors in the city.
The College of Engineering Pune has completed 70 per cent placements, Vishwakarma Institutes have completed 55 per cent of their placements and Cummins College of Engineering for Women have already placed 80 per cent of their students, said the officials of the respective colleges.
“Almost 200 out of 300 students are already placed from our college. This season is definitely better than the last academic year. IT is everywhere. Even automobile and other companies are going electronic now. Hence the use of IT and electronics engineers are increasing,” said Girish Mundada, T&P officer at Pune Institute of Computer Technology, (PICT).
“Another major trend is the increasing recruitment by small and medium scale industries and start ups. Around 40 per cent of our placements were in these companies. Even the so-called dream companies have recruited more this year with eight students from our college with a student getting a package of Rs 30 lakh a year from a Japanese company,” said Mundada.
When it comes to job titles, the largest openings in 2013 were in marketing, business development and sales, with junior positions
