In a shocking revelation, four out of every 10 engineers in India are unable to understand English, which includes their day-to-day conversation and writing correct sentences, a survey has found.

According to the survey by employability measurement company Aspiring Minds, English learning level among engineering graduates is very poor in India.

More than 25 per cent of engineers do not even possess the English comprehension skills required to understand engineering school curriculum, the survey, which analysed the English skills of over 55,000 engineers in 250 different engineering colleges in India, said.

"Around 36 per cent of engineering graduates would be unable to read official reports and transcripts and derive information out of them, even when the information is explicitly stated," the survey noted.

The findings of the survey are in sharp contrast to the fact that English fluency is considered as one of the key qualities that recruiters look for during the interview process.

The survey found that only 57 per cent of the respondents can write grammatically correct sentences in English and less than 48 per cent can understand moderately sophisticated words of English.

Moreover, candidates with English skills above the local average stand out from the crowd and garner 30-50 per cent higher salaries than similarly-qualified candidates without English skills.

According to Aspiring Minds Director Varun Aggarwal, this is by far the most comprehensive analysis of English skills of engineers in India.

Interestingly, not more than 30 per cent of engineering students, who undergo stress and exhaustion while preparing for entrance exams, were acquainted with the

We Don't Respect Our Language

I have gone through the article and it sounds that the survey is more of english skills rather than engineering knowledge and skills. It sound to be another way of promoting english language and demeaning the importance of mother language. That is how many a languages have vanished from the earth. Do Germans, Russians, Spanish, Ukranian or many other non-english speaking engineers are required to converse in english in their home country? If not, why we Indians are required to have an understanding of another language in our own land? Is it not enough that an engineer can do a better job in his language? We will probably always look at the west for everything and assume that everything we have is below par and western things are better even the knowledge of english. It is time that we start respecting our languages, if we don't respect ourselves, our language, our culture and our country...no one will. Stop looking at west.

Engineering colleges level is rock bottom

These problems because of culture in India and due to elders in family including parents. Forget about english the overall quality of engineers are going down and i am afraid to say today's Engineer has less IQ and knowledge than a BSC graduate( 10 yr back). It is easy to get engineering degree than to learn driving or swimming ( i am not talking about pro in those category). Childrens are taught sicne childhood that, work hard once you are selected for IIT or some good engineering college, your life will be easy and then we will not ask you to study and that's what ppl do now a days. They just don't study, once they are in engineering college. Now a days engineering colleges has become place to go for cheap liquor party and some colleges do drugs as well... What we are doing is just creating another cast of useless ppl called engineers of India.
