SOCIALITE Shobhaa De set off a controversy Tuesday with a tweet on Gopinath Munde’s death: “Shocking news about Munde's death. How tragic R.I.P. Burrey din aa gaye for the family. Deepest condolences.” The post, which was re-tweeted, led to other Twitter users accusing De of being insensitive. Seven hours later, De tweeted an apology: “My deepest condolences to Munde family in their hour of grief. No offence was ever intended. Apologies for inadvertently hurting sentiments.”
She told The Indian Express: “When I said burre din aa gaye,of course I meant it in the sense that he is the head of the family and this is a tremendous loss for them... It was a completely innocuous statement meant with the utmost respect...”
De was scheduled to attend a book reading session of Anticipating India: The Best of National Interest by Shekhar Gupta, Editor-in-Chief of The Indian Express, in south Mumbai on Tuesday, but did not attend.
