Mumbai: With the Maharashtra poll verdict indicating a lead for Congress-NCP combine, BJP-Shiv Sena on Thursday conceded defeat and blamed the Raj Thackeray-led MNS for cutting their votes resulting in their poor-showing.
"We accept defeat...We lost in Mumbai, we lost miserably in western Maharashtra and we could not achieve our aim," BJP Vice President BJP Gopinath Munde said.
"MNS appears set to win about 13 seats after garnering around 5-6 per cent votes. After all, these were our votes," he said.
Expressing disappointment over the poll verdict, Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi said, "we never expected these results...if it is a defeat, it has to be accepted by everybody."
Refuting suggestions of fighting between him and BJP Maharashtra chief Nitin Gadkari, Munde said, "we campaigned unitedly. There is no question of fighting between us. The MNS is the only one reason."
There have been reports of differences between Munde and Gadkari on various issues concerning the functioning of the state party unit. Munde rubbished suggestions that infighting in the BJP's state unit or at the centre had cost it dearly in Maharashtra.
"This talk about differences are wrong. It is only in public perception," Munde's whose relations with state BJP chief Nitin Gadkari has been under severe strain, said.

It didn't really have popularity in 1960's (as its shenanigans upset commerce in Mumbai, the mainspring of the state) and decided arrogantly to run federal in 1972, getting a drubbing; managed to "reinvent" itself as Hindutva party (which still didn't really catch on in western Maharashtra, but could have in Vidharbha birthplace of Sangh Parivar). By insisting on being senior partner (rather than BJP), it dug its own grave (though it managed to get 1995 election due to collaboration AND low popularity of Congress at that time, that was aberration).

If the BJP really wants to get back to power, it must during the next 5 years work sincerely with the masses at grass roots and concentrate on development instead of sticking to the mandir agenda. No one wants mandirs, they just want peace, two square meals a day and a decent and qauality living - the congress has also not provided these basic needs but they as of know seem to be the better evil -the results have shown this.

The moronic monkeys of BJP and SS should get used to conceding defeats. Defeats just look too good on them. People of India are maturing faster than the retards who join these religion based evil organisations. I pity the mental capacity of those who still voted for these anti-national mafia.

How is caste based reservations secular? How is muslim votebank politicsnot communal? How is excluding people learning 4lakhs PA from 'creamy layer' and calling them backwards for reservation not communal? How secular is it allowing illegal Banglasdeshis to take over whole of India for creating a votebank?

Vikas I never said congress is flawless and I would be last person to be apologist for any political party. I believe most congress politicians are as corrupt and as communal as those of BJP. This is so because we Indians, on the whole, are narrow minded and communalist of one or other kind. The difference between congress and BJP is that BJP has adopted communalism as its official policy. There are some good people in congress while BJP has none. If you feel strongly for India and the issues you wrote about, I suggest you to join some secular party and try to make difference from within. Don't be an angry reactionary fool of BJP or some sena. Wish you well.

BJP still has not come to terms to understand that the people of India don't want divisive or religious politics. People are more interested in the 21st century life rather than temples and mosques. Whole of senior leadership of BJP must be sacked. Even youngsters like Rudy, Prakash are all rubbish and they talk rubbish. I say sack them all and start from scratch without RSS/ VHP/SS etc etc. Get rid of the junk and start a serious national party. Otherwise BJP is doomed.

This is the time BJP realise its mistakes and go ahead with its future. Otherwise the states which is running by BJP also going to lose because of its internal quarreling. It has to come back to its reputation and to the country that prove that the party still strong and the leaders should forget their ego. Rajnath Singh really spoiled the party image. We need good party like BJP more stablise and a weapon for ruling party and not losing its image in public's eyes.

congress won the assemply elections in Maharastra due to MNS. MNS has considerable vote share. All the these vote shouhdl have gone to BJP and Shiv Sena If MNS did not exisit. Itis really sad day for Maharastra that inspiete of many bomb blast and inefficient governance of COng -Ncp combine... MSN and SHiva sena should bury their difference and BJP should increse their vote share....
