An enquiry has finally been ordered into the Shimla Municipal Corporation’s decision to clear about 96 maps for new and old buildings - a few of these in the banned core area of the town - just two days before the state Assembly poll results.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, who had received a detailed complaint on the issue, had directed Chief Secretary Sudripta Roy to hold an inquiry and submit a report on how the Municipal Corporation is being run.

Confirmed the new Shimla Municipal Commissioner Amarjeet Singh: “It’s correct, I have been asked to conduct an inquiry and submit a preliminary report. I have got all the records with me relating to a meeting of the Single Umbrella Committee, which took decision on approval of the pending building maps.”

Sources said the maps were cleared in undue haste while the model code of conduct was in place. ‘

The beneficiaries allegedly included certain influential people and three leading mobile service operators - whose mobile towers were cleared with doing spot verifications.

Mayor Sanjay Sood has also raised objections on the clearance of 96 building maps in one go during the Single Umbrella Committee meeting on December 18, 2012.

Inquiries reveal the government may entrust these cases to the state vigilance and anti-corruption Bureau. The government is also examining the records relating to the controversial multi-crore apartment project of Bamloi builders and may set up a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to probe the role of some officers and politicians.
