SC to look at plea on Army alimony

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine the Centre’s request for “harmonising” the provisions under the Army Act and other laws relating to alimony orders passed against Army personnel.
A Bench led by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir issued notices on an appeal filed by the government against orders of the Armed Forces Tribunal.
Additional Solicitor General Indira Jaisingh submitted before the court that in case of Army personnel, orders for providing maintenance to his wife and children could be passed both by the Army authority and a civil court. If both the authorities pass orders, she pointed out, there was no clarity on how the orders are to be reconciled.
Admitting the plea, the Bench said it would examine the point of law in question and fixed the matter for hearing after six weeks.
