SC pushes govt on NGT posts

Making it clear that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) could not be left in “doldrums”, the Supreme Court Thursday sought an undertaking from the Centre that will give the time by when it could notify the appointment of chairperson and other members of the tribunal.
A Bench of Justices G S Singhvi and S J Mukhopadhaya also expressed displeasure over failure of the government’s law officer in putting up a file relating to the recommendation made by the CJI for appointment of NGT chairperson. The court on Wednesday fixed the matter for hearing on Thursday after ASG A S Chandhiok said the Centre had sought some “clarifications” from CJI over the recommendation of a sitting SC judge for the chairperson’s post. The ASG was asked to bring the relevant file.
However, on a perusal of the file, the Bench noted that a letter by the CJI relating to the appointment was not in it.
