SC praises Delhi govt for improving power supply

“In Delhi, the situation is a thousand times better now. It is a indeed a lot better than the time when we had taken up this matter. The government deserves some appreciation,” a bench led By Justice D K Jain said.

The bench said the power situation in Delhi was much better than the National Capital Region (NCR).

The court remembered the time when the colonies under the erstwhile Delhi Electric Supply Undertaking had no electricity meters. “The situation has improved with passage of time. Hence, now a time has come when we should close the proceedings in this case,” the bench said.

Amicus curiae Ranjit Kumar told the court that transmission and distribution losses have come down from nearly 35 per cent to 10 per cent.

Kumar also contended that in light of Delhi government’s decision to regularise a large number of unauthorised colonies, they must ensure arrangement for enhanced consumption of power. Kumar said the Delhi government has decided to sell a part of its power between November and February and wondered whether additional power consumed by the newly-regularised colonies was factored in the estimates given to the court.
