While young women in India are fast embracing western outfits, the traditional saree has become one of the most sought after garments for Canadian women.

With modern tools of marketing and increasing number in varieties they offer, saree stores witness a mushroom growth in the capital Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.

"These days, Canadians love to wear saree. You can see women comfortably draping a saree in many Canadian functions, especially at Indian weddings and parties," Christina Soars, a student in the University of Toronto, said.

She said that an increasing number of NRIs in Canada were giving up their western outfits and have started to opt for Indian sarees. Thanks to the Indian films and Indo-Canadians who made this traditional Indian outfit, a hit in Canada.

"Saree is definitely making a comeback with young girls in Canada" Jitinder Wirk, who owns a Saree store ‘Mehar’ in Vancouver since 2005, said.

"Especially Indians living in Canada are trying to get back to their roots and Indian fashion by wearing Saree," said Inder Jandoo, owner of Sonu Saree Palace in Toronto.

"For many young Indian Canadian girls, the sarees represent glamour and romance, thanks to Bollywood movies. Around 30 to 40 per cent of people who visit my shop are teenagers," he said.

Navi Gill, a 20-year-old Indian Canadian girl feels more of a woman when she is dressed in a Saree. "It makes me feel like more of a woman."
