The civic administration has served a notice to Sara-Sahara shopping centre at Crawford Market for illegally constructing a second floor on the existing ground-plus-one structure, said civic officials. The controversial shopping centre is allegedly owned by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

“We are in the process of seeking police protection before we start the demolition process. The building has permission only for the ground-plus-one structure. It is illegal to construct additional floors,” said a senior civic official. The official said that the foundation work to construct the second floor has started. The shopkeepers association of the centre too has not sought any permission from the BMC for any such construction. The civic body has initiated the process of informing the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) about the illegal construction as it owns the land.

Earlier this year, the civic body had razed around 150 shops at the complex. Illegal shops had sprung up on the CPWD owned-land in June this year after a major fire gutted 2,000 shops in the complex in November last year. While some of the 150-odd shops were set in temporary structures, others were being operated from the old market. The market is known for illegal sales of mobile phones and electronic accessories.
