Refuting that he was given privileges because of his celebrity status, Bollywood actor Salman Khan has requested the Supreme Court to uphold the Rajasthan High Court order of staying his conviction in the 1998 black buck poaching case.

The Rajasthan High Court had in November last year granted relief to the actor by staying the conviction in the case by the trial court in April 2006.

Pleading the apex court to dismiss the state police appeal against the stay order, his affidavit stated: “It is denied that the High Court failed to apply the principle that everyone is equal before law and granted me special privilege because I am a celebrity. The courts have at all times treated me as any other ordinary citizen and I have always complied with the conditions imposed upon me.”

Salman submitted to the court that he was also a philanthropist and promoted Indian films, and his professional engagement generated employment for people.

Countering allegations of the Rajasthan police that one prime witness was threatened to depose in his favour, Salman said it was a mere charge which was never proved. The case will be heard next on September 5.
