Sachin Tendulkar, arguably the greatest batsman in contemporary cricket, today retired from one-day internationals, bringing the curtains down on a glorious career spanning 23 years during which he re-wrote record books with his phenomenal feats.

The 39-year-old Tendulkar conveyed his decision to the BCCI, which issued a statement on his behalf to make the announcement. The champion batsman will, however, continue to play in Tests.

"I have decided to retire from the One-Day format of the game. I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of being part of a World Cup wining Indian team. The preparatory process to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right earnest," Tendulkar was quoted as saying in the statement released by the Board.

"I would like to wish the team all the very best for the future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their unconditional support and love over the years," he added.

Tendulkar, considered the most complete batsman in modern cricket, retires from the ODI format at the top of the run-getters' list.

He amassed 18,426 runs in 463 one-dayers at an average of 44.83. The diminutive right-hander has an astonishing 49 hundreds in the format, including a double hundred – the first in this form of the game. Tendulkar also has a mammoth tally of 96 ODI 50s to his credit.

Tendulkar's Test records are as awe-inspiring. The right-hander has 15,645 runs at an average of 54.32 in 194 Tests that he has played so far. The tally includes

Most reports about Sachin Tendulkar's Cricketing feats contain loads of staggering statistics. A compilation of the records he holds would probably be never complete. Statisticians would continue to dig out astonishing records that he broke or created. But those who relish statistics are missing a point or two. Sachin's Cricket was all about sublime grace, stylish poise and sheer joy to watch. Those who marvel his longevity and the hard work that goes into maintaining physical as well as mental fitness, tend to overlook the child-like joy that he exhibited in everything that he did on the Cricket field - batting, bowling and even fielding- and his religious adherence to highest standards of sportsmanship. Indeed he was a great Cricketer and perhaps the only one in his class but I think that he should be remembered more as someone who made Cricket a great game!

I'm 33 and i started watching cricket at around the same time when Sachin started playing cricket, from then on for me Cricket was Sachin and Sachin was cricket (i'm sure there are millions of his fans like me who thinks the same). Despite his recent failures I just enjoyed watching him play even if he hits only a single trademark cover drive in his innings... I feel a champion like him, the greatest modern era batsman could have retired from the onedayers' by holding the bat in his hands, perhaps he should have played one more one day game...it would have been fitting retirement for sachin. But as they say he must decide his own course of action, i respect that. However i hope he will play few more tests before calling it a day in Tests too...i wish he will find a way to go from Tests on a high. For a die hard fan like me, the cricket will not be the same without Sachin.
