The rupee today rose by 20 paise to 54.27 against the US dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market on selling of the American currency by exporters and banks.

Forex dealers said besides dollar selling by exporters, a higher opening in the domestic equity market also supported the rupee.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark index Sensex rose by 45.16 points, or 0.23 per cent, to 19,469.26 in opening trade today.

The rupee had tumbled by 33 paise to close at 54.47 against the US currency in the previous session on Friday, due to a firm dollar overseas.
