The rupee today gained 14 paise to 55.09 against the dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange on selling of the US currency by exporters and banks.
Besides, euro and yen's strengthening against the dollar overseas also supported the rupee, dealers said.
The rupee had lost 16 paise yesterday to close at nearly six-week low of 55.23 against the dollar amid sustained demand of the US currency from oil companies. Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark index Sensex fell by 24.65 points, or 0.12 per cent, to 19,666.77 in early trade today.
