The Road Underbridge (RUB) that is being constructed at Mauli Jagran is likely to be completed and opened for traffic by May next year. Once operational, the RUB would provide an additional road between Chandigarh and Panchkula.
The construction of the RUB started in November last year. A new technology is being used for the construction with prefabricated concrete structures being pushed beneath the tracks with the help of hydraulic jacks. This ensures that plying of trains is not disrupted while the work is on. The construction is being undertaken in collaboration with the Railways.
RCC (reinforced cement concrete) boxes are being constructed under the railway line. While two boxes would cater to the three-lane dual carriageway, there would be another two boxes that would cater to slow-moving traffic and pedestrians on smooth gradient. The lane for non-motorised transport is being constructed in a manner that less effort is required to cross the RUB.
The total cost of the project is Rs 40 crore, including the cost of the connecting roads being built. The existing four-lane road from Hallomajra to the RUB is being six-laned. Six-lane roads are being constructed to connect to the RUB. These would also have slow carriageways.
UT Finance Secretary V K Singh, who inspected the site on Tuesday, said it was a different kind of RUB being constructed at the site. “We ensured that special provisions are kept for the slow-moving traffic which is not present at other places. The RUB would provide an important link between Chandigarh and Panchkula. The Haryana government would also undertake work for widening the roads on their side to facilitate people,” he added.
The project had hit several roadblocks before it got underway last year. One of them was the presence of underground pipelines. It is after these were shifted that work could be undertaken. Even during the construction, similar problems are being encountered. A tubewell was present at the site that has now been disconnected.
As for the proposal for an RUB at Manimajra, several hindrances are being encountered. As many as eight pipelines are present at the site where the construction was proposed.
